Inhabit Life

"Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground." - Rumi

Welcome!

Hi, I’m Barrett. I’m glad you’ve found your way here.

Pursuing therapy is a courageous step that embodies strength and vulnerability.  It can also be confusing and difficult.  It’s a major investment of time, money, and emotional energy with no guarantee of the kind of progress you hope for.  Navigating the noise of websites, images, text; sending cold emails and calls without response. I have great respect for the pursuit of life and good living that have led you here.

I chose to become a therapist because of the powerful support I’ve received amidst my own journey. It’s been marked by immense challenge, hard-earned self-discovery, and profound change—both for myself and those I’ve walked alongside. And, it’s left me with a desire to build a better, safer, more vibrant world for us all.

Over the years, I have witnessed the transformative power of therapy, and I am committed to creating an environment where every person feels seen, valued, and capable of lasting change.

Whether you’re facing crises, addressing deep-seated trauma, breaking free from behavioral ruts, or seeking greater fulfillment, my work is to help you see yourself more clearly and find the courage and skill to build a more bold and vibrant life.

Why “Inhabit Life”

Inhabit Life is more than a practice name.  It’s a personal and professional calling.  In an age of disconnection from our bodies, relationships, neighborhoods, and nature, “Inhabit Life” is an invitation to be where our feet are.  To be present to the fullness of the human experience – joy, sadness, excitement, pleasure, loneliness, boredom, rage.  To be vulnerable, take risks, and live into our deepest values and desires.  And, to do it compassionately amidst the human, animal, and plant communities surrounding us as we work towards a more just, safe, and vibrant life for all.  Our work centers three values:

  • Authenticity – Life provides bountiful reasons to turn inward, shut down, and mask. Authenticity invites us into the process of curiosity and risk-taking. We’ll work to come into gentle contact with the thoughts, emotions, images, and urges built into our psyche through the experiences of our lives. We’ll embrace every part of our story, even the messy and painful pieces, and show up with courage, honesty, and openness.
  • Embodiment – Life unfolds in the real, material world – in our bodies, relationships, and daily choices. Harmful embodied experiences give rise to depressions, fears, compulsions, and more that trouble life. Therefore, new embodied experiences are necessary for healing. Uncovering what is within and knowing we’re not meant to be solitary creatures, we’ll take thoughtful risks to show up more authentically in our relationships, rewire our nervous systems, and build bold lives.
  • Liberation – Only an authentic, embodied life creates the possibility of liberation – for ourselves and others. Liberation invites us into the practice of freedom, justice and love. A self that loves every bit of ourselves and lives in to the possibility of better. Liberation tears down barriers and embodies a world that is littered with love and allows all to become the most colorful versions of their ever-evolving selves.

My Approach

I believe that every person deserves a space to be fully themselves without judgment—a space where healing, discovery, and transformation happen on their own terms.

My foundational approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which emphasizes building a mindful, meaningful, and resilient life through self-compassion, mindfulness, and values-based living. I also integrate other therapeutic models to adapt to your unique needs and goals. These include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) tools, somatic, experiential, narrative, and trauma-focused practices.  While most sessions are conversational, they could also include art, writing, mindfulness, mindful movement, walks, psychoeducation, and much more according to your interests and needs

Therapy with me is collaborative. Together, we explore points of pain and healing, and we develop paths that align with who you most want to become. It’s about taking the next right steps, whatever those may be, and doing so with compassion and purpose. I am here to walk with you—towards a life where you feel empowered, whole, and truly alive.

I am licensed to practice therapy with clients based out of Georgia.  Coaching, training, and consulting can be provided regardless of client location.

The Space

Inhabit Life partners with Blue House Wellness, a therapy coworking space, to provide in-person service.  It is located in Scottdale, just outside of Decatur in metro Atlanta.

When you arrive, you’ll find free on-site parking.  You’ll be given a code to enter at the front door.  Once inside, sign-in on the tablet resting on the table, grab a drink, and relax.  Follow the signs to the bathroom straight down the hall and then to the right.  You’ll be met in the lobby shortly.

This is a come as you are experience where every bit of who you are is welcome.

Once in the office, make yourself comfortable.  Slip off your shoes if you’d like.  Sit, lay, stand.  Move, fidget, be still.  We may even go for a walk or sit outside according to your needs and interest.

More About Me

When I’m not working with clients, you might find me fiddling with wood, enjoying a good story, or spending time in nature. Here’s a bit more about me:

  • Favorite Recent Reads: I’m currently reading the 3rd book in N.K. Jemisin’s “Broken Earth” trilogy – a beautiful post-apocalyptic fantasy about structural oppression, family connection, tragic redemption, and liberative sacrifice.  I recently loved “What My Bones Know” by Stephanie Foo – a profound autobiographical exploration of complex trauma, resilience, and the human spirit.

  • Movie or Show That Made an Impact Recently: “Shrinking” on Apple TV – If I’m accidentally too blunt in the therapy room, blame it on this sharp, heartfelt comedy about love, authenticity, and 22nd chances as it unfolds among this crotchety, adorable group of therapists.

  • Go-To Podcast:  I adore the reverence for life that flows throw the personalities, themes, and conversations of “On Being” with Krista Tippett and her diverse guests.

  • Weekend Activities: Hanging with my “Little” from Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Hiking trails.  Gardening.  Eating ice cream.  Trying to convince my dog to cuddle.  Juggling.
