Inhabit Life

Therapy for a vibrant life and a better world

Welcome

I’m Barrett Smith – a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), therapist, yoga instructor, and educator.

I work towards a more just, liberating, and colorful world through therapy with individuals age 14+, relationships, and families.

Together, we struggle towards a society that vibrates with possibility; an environment where all creatures can thrive; a community that celebrates the small.

We embody a joy that is steadfast amidst adversity; a rage that demands justice; a boredom that seeds creativity; an authenticity that allows love; a loneliness that invites connection; a fear that keeps us safe; a courage that pushes us on.  Even when it feels most faint, we live towards the possibility that a more vibrant life and a better world are possible.

Take some time to explore the website and contact me below to get to work.

Happiness is nice - but it ain't everything

I often begin with a simple, yet jarring statement – “I don’t help people be happy.”

Of course, most people pursuing therapy are doing so amidst psychological, emotional, or behavioral suffering.  Their thoughts, emotions, and actions push and pull them away from a vibrant, full life.  For many, that desperate pain leads to a desperate, fear-driven pursuit of happiness and health. The pain is too strong and the stuckness too entrenched, so we learn all kinds of ways to avoid it all costs.

We expertly suppress painful thoughts and feelings, and addictions and compulsions arise to overwhelm them. We avoid the possibility of deep relationships with others, or ourselves, out of fear of what they/we may find.  We avoid risks that may open up incredible new possibilities because they may also bring failure. Our obsession with self-care brings exhaustion and a nagging feeling that there must be something deeply wrong with us.

In the long run, our attempts to feel “good,” deepen our suffering.

Instead of happiness, I invite people into the raw fullness of human experience – with all its pain and triumph.  Gently creating lives filled with possibility. Discovering satisfaction and pride as we embrace all the mess inherent to a life well-lived.

Therapeutic Approach

At Inhabit Life Therapy, my approach is centered on the flexible principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and adapted to the unique needs and visions of each client.  In the end, I work not just for a reduction in suffering but even moreso for the experience of a life truly worth living.

Along the way, I integrate a variety of techniques such as DBT, mindfulness, exposure therapy, expressive arts, IFS, yoga, and more according to your unique needs and interests.

I believe therapy should be a safe, affirming, and non-judgmental space where you can explore who you are and who you want to be in every given moment.

I work with individuals aged 14 and older, as well as couples and families across a variety of issues
